Frequently asked questions

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Everything is counted in your browser, on your own device, and your text is never uploaded. It is not stored either, unless you tick “Save my draft on this device”: then it is kept in this browser only, and unticking it deletes it. It even works offline once the page has loaded.
Does it count Somali words correctly?
Yes. In Somali the apostrophe is part of the word, so “la’aan”, “su’aal”, “ka’” and “la’” each count as one word. Hyphenated words such as “ka-qaybgal” and numbers such as 3.5 or 1,000 also count as one word.
How many characters fit in an SMS, a post on X or an Instagram caption?
An SMS holds 160 characters, a post on X 280, a WhatsApp status 700, an Instagram caption 2,200 and a LinkedIn post 3,000. For search results, keep titles under about 60 characters and meta descriptions under about 160. The “Platform limits” panel shows how much room you have left for each.
How are reading time and speaking time worked out?
Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of 200 words per minute. Speaking time assumes 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for a speech, a presentation or a voice note.
Why is my count different from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?
Tools treat hyphens, apostrophes, numbers and symbols a little differently. This counter treats Somali apostrophes and hyphenated words as single words and ignores emoji and punctuation on their own, so the total can differ by a few words.
